After Christendom?

In October and November 2015 reading groups will meet to consider together Stanley Hauerwas’ After Christendom: How the church is to behave if freedom, justice and a Christian nation are bad ideas. Each of the meetings will consider one of the chapters of the book in sequence – a total of six sessions.

Clicking on the “Look inside” book image on this Amazon.com web page will give you an overview of what the book is about; the chapter topics are:

“Why there is no salvation outside the church”,

“Why justice is a bad idea for Christians”,

“Why freedom of religion is a subtle temptation”,

“How we lay bricks and make disciples”,

“How marriage is a subversive act”,

“How we educate Christians in liberal societies”

  • The details of the groups are as follows:Tuesday nights 7.30pm in North Melbourne – at the minister’s manse – commencing Tuesdays October 20 – December 8 (omitting Cup Day, Nov 3)
  • Friday mornings, 10.30am, Habitat Uniting Church Hawthorn in the Augustine library – 2 Minona St, Hawthorn – commencing Friday October 30 – December 4
  • You are welcome to attend either group variously through the series – the Tuesday and Friday groups will be considering the same chapter each week for the last four chapters; the Tuesday group begins a week early on account of Cup Day, after which the groups will be in sync)
  • (There is a possibility of another groups close to the city or in Hawthorn if there is sufficient interest)

Please let Craig know if you are interested in one of these study groups, preferably via our registration form; if you’re keen and can’t make one of these, let me know and we might be able to convene another in those weeks. (Contact: Craig Thompson, minister at Mark the Evangelist).

The book is available electronically (at least on Kindle, and possibly other formats from other suppliers) and via other online book sellers; The Book Depository is a reliable source which can usually deliver books within a week or so. Other online sources can be found here.
