When Church Stops Working – Online Discussion Groups Oct-Nov 2023

Join us for a series of conversations around Andrew Root and Blair Bertrand’s When church stops working: a future for your congregation beyond more money, programs and innovation.

These studies will be shared by a number of Uniting Churches (and perhaps others) — it will be great to be thinking together about these things across congregations!

Over 8 weeks, we will consider:

        1. Why your church has a problem, but it isn’t what you think
        2. Busy people, busty church – a killer cocktail
        3. Stop all the having and just be
        4. It’s time to wait, but for what?
        5. Waiting brings life, not a slow death
        6. Forget the mission statement – get a watchword
        7. Out of the family basement
        8. Nothing can separate you

Participants should get their own copy of the book and read the set chapter for that week in preparation for the discussion.

The quickest and cheapest option for getting your copy is probably here (paperback via Amazon, or Kindle), or you could try Koorong but it may be available elsewhere .

The sessions run for 75-90 mins, and will meet as follows (please note, start date is now a week later than originally advertised):

        • 1 – ONLINE Wednesday nights, 7.45pm, from October 4
        • 2 – ONLINE Friday afternoons, 1.30pm, from October 6

Please register you interest in the form below, in order to receive the Zoom link for these conversation groups.

We hope you can join us for what will certainly be stimulating discussions!

MtE Worship – at the Centre for Theology and Ministry

        SUNDAY MtE WORSHIP

On July 23 2023, MtE shifted its Sunday worship to the Centre for Theology and Ministry, 29 College Crescent, Parkville.

Limited parking is available onsite on Sundays, and very limited parking during office hours during the week. There is usually plenty of street parking available nearby. Details below!

        GETTING THERE and PARKING

Car parking is available on-site. The entrance to the car park is directly opposite the main entrance to the Melbourne General Cemetery.

The car park is accessed from College Crescent, from the east, for turning left into the car park. NOTE – if you’re coming from the west, you can’t turn right into the car park but can continue to the next roundabout at the intersection with Swanston Street and do a U-turn to approach the CTM in the correct direction for access to the car park. If you miss the college turn-off, veer left around the corner to find plenty of street parking not much further on.

The car will either be open (boom gate up), or staffed by someone to open it, at least until the commencement of worship. If you arrive late, we can’t guarantee that the car park will be accessible.

Car parking is also available in the streets around the college; there is space enough for all MtE cars in the CTM carpark, but street parking might be more convenient for some.

Public transport is via trams up Lygon and Swanston Streets, and Royal Parade, each with a short-ish walk to the CTM.

        GETTING INTO THE BUILDING

Please plan to arrive early – 9.45am or thereabouts – to allow for missing the turn-off, getting lost, or finding your way into the building.

Entry is via the College Crescent end of the building, through glass sliding doors. Someone will be present to greet you and let you in.

Worship is in Yuma Auditorium will be on your right once you enter the body of the building.

If you’re late, someone will need to come open the doors for you. We’re still working on a system to make this possible!

        MORNING TEA

Morning tea will be served in the hospitality area just near the worship space, following worship — we encourage you to joins there!
