MtE Update – August 14, 2025

……………………………………………………………………..

Coming Soon!

Advance Notice

  • Monday Movies at the Nova. This group got off to a shaky start last week! Those there thought we’d continue to give it a go, trialling the first Monday of the month from September (Monday September 1). As the weekly movie schedule is only published on the prior Thursday, advice of movie and time chosen will be late in that week, but will aim in the time zone of a 1000-1030 start, with coffee/toasties in the Nova’s own cafe for those interested to stay and discuss the film.
  • Quarterly Conversation on the Quarterly Essay: Friday October 17, 11.00–12.30, in the library at the Center for Theology and Ministry.

Wesley Centre

MtE is a sponsor of the Wesly Centre

  • 21st August -The Ethics of Making Progress: The How and Why of Policymaking, with former MP Jenny Macklin. Making Progress (with Joel Deane – pictured) tells the stories behind transformational initiatives such as the Apology to the Stolen Generations, paid parental leave and the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as well as pension reforms that lifted one million Australians out of poverty. In this conversation, Jenny Macklin will discuss the values that animated her political career, and the lessons she learned about how good policy happens.

Third Quarter Studies 2025 – Passions of the Soul

Our third quarter 2025 study groups will use Rowan Williams’ Passions of the soul.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

With compelling and illuminating insight, he shows the cost of living in a culture that is theologically and philosophically undernourished, working with a diminished and trivialized picture of the human self. The Eastern tradition teaches us how to develop our self-knowledge and awareness, so that we can relate to the world without selfish illusions. Only then can we be ready for our eyes to be opened to God, and avoid destructive patterns of behaviour. Only in this way can we understand the kind of people we need to become.

MtE’s study groups seek to be ecumenical in participation, with people from MtE, Parkville’s St Carthages, Carlton’s Church of All Nations, St Mary’s Anglican and Kew Uniting Church often being among those participating.

At least two online (Zoom) groups are planned on Wednesday evenings (7.45pm) and Friday afternoons (1.30PM), for six-seven weeks (one week per chapter).

These studies will commence on Wed Aug 13 and Friday Aug 15.

Participants should get their own copies of the book. Amazon will be the quickest, among other places .
