MtE Update – July 9 2020

  1. The second part of our Intro the OT study series begins next week. All are most welcome — it’s easy to pick up if you’ve not covered the earlier video material (although doing a catch-up would be great ‘lock-down’ time-filler!). Groups are presently scheduled for Wednesday evening and Friday afternoon; more details here. One group presently has about 12 members and the other about 8 — we may be able to add a further group if there’s more interest. If you are planning to join for the first time, let Craig know so you can be added to the ‘Zoom’ link list!

MtE Update – July 2 2020

  1. We’ve got another preaching series coming up from about the end of July, after following Paul to the end of chapter 8 in Romans.
  2. Our ‘Illuminating Faith’ continues to serve the wider church in its provision of study and worship materials. The latest addition is the full content of the study series which some have recently been enjoying — an introductory survey of the Old Testament from the perspective of modern scholarship. Ezekiel – That they might know I am the Lord

Over the period from August to October 2020 — COVID-19 willing!!! — our principal focus for Sunday sermon reflections will be the writings of the prophet Ezekiel.

Ezekiel appears in the Revised Common Lectionary cycle about 10 times, although largely as a ‘supporting artist’, complementing other readings or events in the liturgical calendar. Our 2020 series will be to look more closely at the preaching of the prophet himself, now supported by whatever other texts pops up in the Lectionary on those Sundays.

Ezekiel is a ‘long haul’ read, and attention to the whole of the text in detail would take a couple of years of Sundays! We will, instead, draw from the text via a series of themes central to Ezekiel, in order to develop a picture of his proclamation and what it might mean for us today. The principal text(s) for the coming Sunday’s reflection will be made known via the weekly MtE Update posts on our home page.

Preparing for the series

Whether you are going to be following the services online or attending MtE once we’re back for worship post-COVID-19, you’ll find it helpful to read the whole of Ezekiel. It’s a long text, and may take a couple of sittings.

Good support for this reading can be found from the Bible Project’s summary of the book in two videos — Part 1 and Part 2 (about 15 minutes in total) — and from Professor Christine Hayes’ introduction to Ezekiel in her Yale lectures (about the first 30 minutes of this lecture). A text intro with a structural breakdown of the book can be found here.

Commentaries

Two possibilities include Nancy Bowen’s ‘Ezekiel’ (Abingdon Old Testament Commentary – full range of purchase options), or Bruce Vawter and Leslie J. Hoppe’s ‘Ezekiel: A New Heart’ (International theological commentary – full range of purchase options. The Interpretation commentary series is also a reliable resource; the Ezekiel one can be previewed here, with a full range of purchase options (paperback) here (hardback and e-versions are also available). These three commentaries haven’t been sighted (libraries are not yet open on the COVID-19 regime!) but can be expected to be quite accessible and are commended on the basis for the quality of the series of which they are parts.

For the intrepid, Robert Jenson’s Ezekiel is a thorough commentary from a historical-theological perspective. Full range of purchase options, also available on Kindle.

Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures PARTS 3 and 4 (October-December 2020)

Our 2020 fourth quarter study group will complete the overview of the Old Testament we have been working through this year, utilising some excellent online lectures and materials from Christine Hayes at Yale University. These lectures provide a solid introduction to the OT as a whole as well as an introduction to critical historical work done on the OT over the last two centuries.

The material for each week is given on the ‘Illuminating Faith’ links here, the first five weeks’ material in Part 3 and the final weeks’ material in part 4:

Illuminating Faith – PART 3 of Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures

Illuminating Faith – PART 4 of Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures

The version of the transcript Yale provided here is reformatted for printing, with added paragraph numbers for reference in our discussions. (The original lecture series and its associated resources can be found here. The ‘Sessions’ tab brings up the full list of lectures, and clicking on each brings up the video, text and any other resources (occasional handouts, etc.) relating to that session.)

Groups

There are two groups running; feel free to shift around between groups as you need to! The groups will again meet via the ZOOM video conferencing platform. The Wednesday group will meet at 7.45pm via Zoom (starting October 7), and the Friday group via Zoom at 1.30pm (starting October 9) . If you are not already on the reading group list or have not otherwise received the meeting link, you can request it here: <minister@marktheevangelist.unitingchurch.org.au>. Meetings will be open a few minutes before the start time for you to check your connection. For info about setting up Zoom, see here.

Preparing for the discussions

Prior to each session, watch the lecture via the links below, or read the transcript. There is also an audio-only version of the lectures available on the Yale course homepage under the ‘Sessions’ tab — click on the session you want and the audio can be downloaded at the bottom of the session page. For most sessions there is a section of biblical text which it would be helpful to read in conjunction with Hayes’ lectures, and usually a reference to the Jewish Study Bible (JSB) which will assist those who have a copy.

A book companion to the series as a whole, which some might consider buying, is The Jewish Study Bible: Second Edition. It is not exactly cheap – being around $AU65 new. As well as providing a Jewish reading of the Hebrew Bible, it has a great deal of comment in the margins of each page as well as introductory essays to each of the Old Testament books and scholarly articles on history, interpretation, and so forth. It is a book which will likely serve purchasers well for a long time. A look at the ‘Look Inside’ feature for the book on Amazon might be worthwhile, if you’re considering getting a copy. See here for a range of online sources for this book.

MtE Update – 5 June 2020

  1. Return to gathered worship services at MtE. The church council has considered this week the timing of a return to worship, as COVID19-related restrictions are slowly relaxed. We resolved that we would return to gathered worship as soon as possible after restrictions on church gatherings allow as many of the congregation to attend who wish to, without the need to exclude any or run multiple services . That is, we will return to worship when it is possible to gather with around 40 people (the present limit is 20 for a religious gathering, and would likely mean excluding some from worship). We recognise that there may be some who will be hesitant to attend even as the authorities relax the restrictions. It is our plan to continue with an online provision of the service in addition to the gathered service, shifting from the present pre-recorded service to an online livestream of the gathered service. This will mean that those who can’t come to the service will be able to watch a real-time broadcast. We will be working on the logisitics of this over the next couple of weeks so that it is in place when we are ready to return to church (more or less!) together.
  2. News from the Justice and International Mission Cluster (June 3)
  3. This week’s Synod eNews (June 4)

  6. A brief account of ministry of the saint(s) commemorated this Sunday can be found here: June 9 – Columba of Iona.

Illuminating Faith – Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures

Introduction

This is a ‘value-added’ study series based on an excellent online resource from Professor Christine Hayes at Yale University: an engaging undergraduate lecture series providing a broad introduction to the Old Testament as a whole. As well as covering (albeit necessarily briefly) the content of the Old Testament, this course is particularly useful for introducing lay people to modern historical critical methods developed over the last two centuries for interpreting these texts .

The whole series and its associated resources can be found in its original form on the Yale site. The ‘Sessions’ tab on that page brings up the full list of lectures, and clicking on each brings up the video, an audio-only version, transcription text, and any other resources (occasional handouts, etc.) relating to that session.

This IF version uses the Yale videos and a version of the Yale transcript reformatted into an easily printable PDF with paragraph numbering for easy reference in conversation groups. The main supplementary material is gathered together below under each session. The full lecture series is quite long — 24 sessions! — and so is broken up in this IF version into several parts for use either consecutively or in shorter series with breaks in between.

For an introduction to the series and presenting it in your local context, download our introductory document:

Prior to each session, watch the lecture via the links below, or read the transcript. There is also an audio-only version of the lectures available on the course homepage under the ‘sessions’ tab — click on the session you want and the audio can be downloaded at the bottom of the session page.

A book companion to the series as a whole, which at least group leaders and perhaps group members might consider buying, is The Jewish Study Bible: Second Edition. It is not exactly cheap – being around $AU65 new [July 2020]. As well as providing a non-Christian text of the Hebrew Bible, it has a great deal of comment in the margins of each page as well as introductory essays to each of the Old Testament books and scholarly articles on history, interpretation, and so forth. It is a book which will likely serve purchasers well for a long time. A look at the ‘Look Inside’ feature for the book on Amazon might be worthwhile, if you’re considering getting a copy. See here for a range of online sources for this book.

Also included among the additional resources below are links to The Bible Project’s introductions to each of the biblical books Professor Hayes considers. These come from rather a different theological and interpretative perspective than of Hayes but are a quick and useful overview of the biblical books.

The collection of lecture transcripts can be downloaded individually from the session details below, or as a zipped file here:

MtE Update – 29 May 2020

  1. While the relaxing of restrictions on social gatherings now makes a form of gathered worship service possible, the cleaning and spacing requirements are presently onerous and the church council has not yet considered the logistics for a return to ‘normal’ services at MtE. Some of the Synod’s advice in relation to this is available from the Synod eNews postings in this and the last few weeks’ MtE Updates. For the next couple of weeks (at least) Sunday services at MtE will continue to be delivered online. Church Council will consider what we might be able to do in response to the easing of restrictions at the next council meeting, June 4.
  2. Our second quarter study groups continue online for as long as we need to before going back to face-to-face. The studies are an introduction to modern scholarly readings of the Old Testament using online an video and transcript resource — lots of new things to discover! The two groups presently comprise 20 people from 6(!)  congregations. It’s not too late to join in — see here for more information.
  3. Latest Synod eNews (May 28) is here.
  4. This week May 31 / Pentecost we continue our 1 Peter series, looking at 4.1-11; we are a couple of weeks behind where the lectionary is now with 1 Peter. The psalm and the gospel for the Sunday will be as set in the Lectionary, and some background can be found here
  5. A brief account of ministry of the saint(s) commemorated this Sunday can be found here. May 27 – John Calvin.
